I belong to a fantastic group called StampNation — It’s a wonderful community of education, inspiration, exclusive tutorials and videos with friendly crafters from around the world. I love that it has TONS of cards created by fellow StampNation members to inspire me! Recently I was honored to be asked to create a video for the group; a one-sheet background creation for cardmaking.
Today, we’re going to create some cool watercolor galaxy backgrounds for a fun, little set of four themed cards. You’d be surprised how easy it is to quickly create multiple cards when using one main background sheet!
So, here it is… Please be kind–Other than 15-second lettering videos I’ve put on my Instagram, this is my first feature video. I was so nervous!
Don’t be afraid to mix up the traditional watercolors with something else. As you saw in the video, I used Faber Castell’s Glass Bead Glitter Gel mixed in with the ink, and trust me – the actual effects of these galaxy cards are much more vivid in person!
When creating your galaxy backgrounds – choose a large sheet of watercolor paper, that way you can make several cards at once! You’re spending time to create all that gorgeous galaxy watercolor – you may as well make several at once!
You’ll want to select a few colors that will blend well together and not create mud. I chose darker colors here mixed in with a slight pop of some brighter ones for contrast.
To get those great bright stars – use a sharp tool to build from your Nuvo drops.
You HAVE to see the real-life effects yourself, so I challenge you to try this on your own! Change it up with other colors, such as bold, bright, or pastel colors. Any brand of re-inkers or watercolors is great for this technique. If watercolor isn’t your thing, then try ink blending with ink pads. I think Oxide inks would be fantastic for this project as they give a cool milky effect and layer beautifully on top of each other.
Definitely try creating an entire background. Cut it up and create a little collection of projects. You’ll love the outcome!
I’d love for you to join the fun with us on StampNation! It is subscription-based, but well-worth it for me! (I am a member, but not financially affiliated with StampNation–I will make no money if you decide to try it out 🙂 ) There are exclusive videos, tutorials, sneak peaks, coupons, giveaways, challenges, and early-ordering opportunities. I love it there!
Thank you so much for checking out my very first, nervous-ridden, but fun video!
